Leading Asia Expert and Entrepreneur to Help Grow Strategic US-China Initiative

Washington, DC – January 28, 2015 – The 100,000 Strong Foundation today announced that Dr. Kurt M. Campbell has joined its Board of Directors as Vice Chairman. Dr. Campbell is currently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Asia Group LLC, a strategic advisory and investment group specializing in the Asia Pacific region, as well as Chairman of the Board of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), which he co-founded in 2007.

From 2009-2013, Dr. Campbell served as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, where he is widely credited as being a key architect of the Obama Administration’s “Asia Pivot.” During his tenure at State, he was also instrumental in launching the 100,000 Strong Initiative, the Foundation’s precursor.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kurt to 100K Strong’s Board. He is one of the Foundation’s founding fathers and he brings with him both extensive expertise and infectious energy to our growing organization,” said Board Chairman George Lee.

100K Strong President Carola McGiffert stated, “As the 100,000 Strong Foundation continues to work to strengthen the most consequential relationship in the world – that between the United States and China – we need effective leaders who know how to operate at the intersection of strategic and economic issues. Kurt has always been a champion of 100K Strong, but now he will once again be one of its primary drivers.”

“100K Strong is more than an educational initiative; it is a strategic necessity,” said Dr. Campbell. “I saw firsthand during my time at State how 100K Strong can build greater understanding and trust between US and Chinese leaders, regardless of the challenges the relationship faces.”
