Happy New Year from the 100,000 Strong Foundation!
We are beginning 2014 with a running start, adding two dynamic and distinguished individuals to our Advisory Council: Mona Lee Locke and Jamal Mashburn.
Mona Lee Locke is a former television journalist and interim Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Puget Sound. She is a leader on issues related to children and families; she established the Foundation for Early Learning, which provides capacity-building grants, technical assistance and early learning training to ensure children are ready for school. She has also served on the board of directors of Thrive by Five and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
While serving as the First Lady of Washington state, Mona co-produced and narrated an award-winning PBS documentary on early
childhood education in China based on a cultural exchange trip she led to the PRC. Her delegation included 50 teachers, childcare providers, and parent educators from five Pacific Northwest states.
Mona is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She is also the wife of US Ambassador to China Gary Locke. Mona led a fascinating panel discussion at our Inaugural Conference last November.
Jamal Mashburn is perhaps best known for his success on the basketball court. The former college and NBA All-Star spent more than 20 years with the Kentucky Wildcats, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, and New Orleans Hornets. Since his retirement from the NBA, Jamal has immersed himself in a number of business and philanthropic pursuits. He is a successful entrepreneur with a robust business portfolio which includes real estate holdings, restaurant franchises, and car dealerships. He also spent four years as an on-air NBA analyst for ESPN.
Jamal is well known as a civic-minded philanthropist. He has created and endowed the Mashburn Scholarship Fund at the University of Kentucky, which identifies ninth grade students in the Lexington, Kentucky area, tracks them through high school, and then awards a full scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky or Bluegrass Community and Technical College. Jamal is also a founding member, officer, and director of the MAP Foundation, focused on youth mentoring, and Mashburn Family Foundation, which offers programs and support for latchkey children and the children of alcoholics and single mothers.
Mona’s and Jamal’s lifelong focus and expertise on education and philanthropy make them natural additions to the 100,000 Strong Foundation. They join a stellar group of foreign policy, philanthropic, and business leaders on the Advisory Council, and I look forward to the contributions they’ll make in support of our mission to enhance the US-China strategic relationship through study abroad.
Thanks, as always, for your continued support!
